Walk Church Sunday 24th May 2026 – Pentecost

A key theme that caught the group’s imagination was the surprising international diversity of the crowds in Jerusalem. They had come from so many parts of the Roman Empire to celebrate the Jewish festival of Shavuot. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the disciples discovered a liberating boldness to speak the Gospel message in a way that was understood by all. This public preaching was in effect a message given to the whole world; the Gospel message taken back to many parts of the Empire.

On the theme of diversity, we looked closely at the profusion of greenery at this time of year. Some of the more unusual leaves we came across were those of the Wild Service Tree and, local to Pluckley, the Turkey Oak. This variety of oak was a favourite of the Dering family. There was a hope these fast growing oak trees would be suitable for the wood veneer industry, but sadly in the UK climate, the Turkey Oak cracks and rots very easily.

Once back at the church, we were fortified with an amazing spread of cake and tea laid on by Janet Gwillim – thank you, Janet.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, 29th June 2026. I look forward to seeing you then.
