Walk Church Sunday 23rd March 2025. St Mary Selling – ME13 9RD. 1:45pm for 2pm.

Join us for Walk Church this March at St. Mary’s, Selling. Our route will form a figure of eight, taking us through apple orchards, past what is claimed to be the prettiest village cricket ground in Kent, and on into Perry Wood. Perry Wood has a rich history — once the site of a Roman settlement, with evidence of ancient flint stone works. The walk’s most southerly point will be The Pulpit, a viewing platform offering stunning views across the Kent Downs.
As Alex is currently away, I’m grateful to Chris Taylor for planning the walk, with the support of Rev’d Peter Newell. The structure of the walk will vary slightly from usual: Peter will welcome us at both the start and finish, leading prayers, offering reflections for discussion during the walk, and concluding with a blessing.
After the walk, tea and cake will be served, along with the opportunity to see and hear about the remarkable 14th-century stained glass east window — lost for centuries and accidentally rediscovered in the 19th century.
Practical Information:
- Parking: There is good parking in Vicarage Lane close to the old Mortuary and Vicarage.
- Toilet : Can be found in the converted Mortuary.
- The Route : The walk is 3.4 miles long being about 50 mins to reach the Pulpit and 40 mins return.
- Things to aware of: There are a couple of short steep sections and one low solid stile. The ground is firm with only a few areas churned by horses but with well-trodden paths to aid us through.
- There are 3 distinct opportunities to stop and admire the countryside view and ponder in discussion as to why such views are so special to us.
- Dogs: You are welcome to bring a dog. No livestock was encountered on the reconnaissance walk, but please be prepared to put dogs on a lead if required.
It’s always helpful to know if you plan to join us, so we can organise refreshments. Please reply to this email to let us know.
Chris Taylor and Peter Newell will look forward to seeing you there!
